Melting Moments: Energy, Policy and Building

In association with Te Kāhui Whaihanga, New Zealand Institute of Architects Wellington Branch.
Part of the Wellington NZIA Melting Moments sustainability series & presented in collaboration with the Critical Signals programme. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation about energy where together, we'll explore how energy sufficiency, healthy buildings and community resilience come together as the interconnected signals of a changing future.
Energy is often discussed in terms of technology and efficiency, but the deeper questions are about how much is enough, how our buildings support wellbeing, and how communities can thrive within environmental limits. Bringing together voices from across the energy, policy and building sectors, this facilitated discussion will examine the challenges, opportunities and emerging signals shaping Aotearoa's energy future.
Our speakers include:
- Mike Anthony, Go Zero, who will set the scene by exploring the concept of sufficiency and challenging us to rethink energy demand, consumption and long-term sustainability.
- Guy Shaw, Energy Architecture, Architect and Passive House expert, will discuss the limitations of the Building Code and the implications for building performance and occupant health.
- Justine Prain, Rewiring Aotearoa and Sustainability Trust, formerly of Energiesprong. Justine will share insights into large-scale housing retrofit and the opportunities for improving New Zealand's existing housing stock.

Melting Moments creates space for local conversations about the ideas, challenges and opportunities shaping our built environment. In the spirit of Critical Signals, this session will explore emerging shifts that may fundamentally change how we think about energy, housing and wellbeing. It is an opportunity to learn from those leading change, share experiences, and collectively consider what a resilient, low-carbon future for Aotearoa might look like.
What if the most important energy question isn't how efficiently we consume energy, but how much is enough? We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be a timely, engaging and insightful discussion.
