Community That Lasts: Spatial Commoning
Community That Lasts: Spatial Commoning
We are entering an age where many aspects of life feel fragile. Work is precarious and climate hazards are an every day concern. Our communities can meet some of our need to share our concerns face to face and learn, encounter, play and grow together.
But where do we meet?
For 16 years Sophie Jerram has worked to develop spaces for community and artists in environments free of commercial forces, religious control or government purview– urban commons. She was co-founder of Letting Space, Urban Dream Brokerage, a founding Trustee of Vogelmorn Community and lead curator for Critical Signals.
Who governs these spaces?
Crucial to the survival of spaces is examining how and who makes decisions around them. How can we expedite the development of more commons, where more people can feel included and part of the conversation. Horizontal decision making takes time. Sophie will explore the tools that have been used for projects like Urban Dream Brokerage and Vogelmorn and Critical Signals. We will explore a short exercise for transforming more of our fragile worlds into spaces for community.
