In-Person Chicago Exploring and Interrupting Internalized Racism Workshop, November 1st - 2nd, 9am-5pm Central
Fri Nov 1, 2024 9:00 AM - Sat Nov 2, 2024 5:00 PM CDT
126 E. Chestnut St., Chicago, IL, 60611
Description
DESCRIPTION
We understand that we are inundated with biased messages about different racialized groups and that it is nearly impossible to not internalize these messages, whether they are about our own racialized group or another. We believe the work of organizing antiracist institutions must include understanding, grappling with and mitigating how white supremacy operates within us and between our racialized identities.
This workshop explores racialization and internalized racism as tools of cultural hegemony as well as guides participants in recognizing and interrupting the manifestations of their Internalized Racist Inferiority/ Internalized Racist Superiority.
Workshop Objectives
- Refresh and deepen understanding of race and racialization as political tools.
- Guided exploration of participant intersectional identities and the specific and distinct ways that People of White and People of Color internalize racism.
- Build on and practice strategies to recognize and interrupt internalized racism.
A light continental breakfast and lunch will be provided for participants each day. During the registration process, participants will be asked about any dietary needs and restrictions, so that we can ensure that everyone’s needs are met. Also, participation in this workshop will include approximately 30-60 minutes of preparatory work prior to each day – your facilitators will communicate details to you prior to the beginning of the workshop.
Prerequisite Learning
This workshop builds upon the foundation developed in our deep-dive analysis workshop – all participants are therefore required to have attended one of the following:
- Toward Liberation (in-person or digital), OR
- The former Understanding and Analyzing Systemic Racism workshop (pre-pandemic in-person)
Pricing
This workshop is open to participants who are individuals who are opting to join for their own learning and paying out of their own pocket as well as those who are attending as employees representing an institution that is sponsoring their registration. For this reason, we offer two sliding scales for those two different categories of participants.
Individuals choosing to participate without institutional sponsorship should choose a sliding scale rate that best reflects your own ability to pay for the workshop. Consider if you could contribute a higher amount to support other participants as well.
The registration check-out allows for payment through PayPal using a credit card, bank account or to send a physical check. Please note that participants will not be admitted into the workshop until the check is received.
