Overview

Exploring Concealed Stories of Social Justice Along the Chicago Riverwalk/Loop: A Walking Tour

Description:

The sights and sounds of the Chicago Loop and Riverwalk attract millions of residents and tourists each year. Amongst the skyscrapers, monuments, and public spaces, you can find many hidden remnants of history (often hiding in plain sight!) that offer us some valuable lessons about the ongoing struggle for justice.

Join us for a 2.5-hour walking tour that will explore and unpack stories that are often discarded in our “official” national and civic histories. Key stops will include Jean Baptiste Point du Sable’s trading post, Fort Dearborn and the history of Indigenous resistance, and discussion of Chicago’s rich history of activism advancing racial justice, immigrant justice, the rights of workers, disability justice, and gender justice. Please join us for this walk or roll!

Details:

  • The tour will begin and end outside Intelligentsia Coffee Millennium Park Coffeebar, located at 53 E. Randolph St.
  • From Intelligentia, we will head north along Michigan Ave. to the Chicago Riverwalk, then we will walk west along the Riverwalk to its terminus at Wacker and Lake. We will then go further west along Lake St to Desplaines St. to the Haymarket Memorial before turning back east along Randolph St.
  • The entire walk is ADA-accessible, but participants need to be able to navigate city sidewalks.
  • Walking tours will go rain-or-shine, unless lightning is in the vicinity. We encourage participants to dress and prepare for walking in the elements (comfortable walking shoes, layers, umbrella, raincoat, etc.)
  • The tour start is located nearby several CTA bus/train stops, as well as Metra Millennium Station. We recommend using www.transitchicago.com to plan your trip.
  • If you are driving into the Loop, we recommend SpotHero for parking – Millennium Garages regularly have parking available for under $20 and are conveniently located close by.
  • In order to ensure that we can safely walk and talk together, space will be limited to 15 participants per tour.

Cost: $30
