WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
We're surrounded by biased messages about race—in media, institutions, and culture. Whether these messages are about our own racial identity or others', we all internalize them to some degree. Building antiracist organizations means confronting how racism operates not just in policies and systems, but within ourselves and in our interactions across racial lines. This workshop examines how racialization and internalized racism work to maintain systems of domination. You'll explore how these dynamics show up within yourself, between racial groups, and in your organization—and learn strategies for interrupting them.
Outcomes:
Participants in Crossroads’ Exploring and Interrupting Internalized Racism workshop will deepen their capacity to:
- Understand how racism works as a political tool – Learn how racialization is used to create and maintain power dynamics, not just individual prejudice.
- Explore your own internalized racism – Through guided reflection, examine how you've absorbed racist messages about your own racial identity and others', and how this shows up differently for white people and people of color.
- Recognize internalized racism in real time – Develop skills to notice when internalized racism is influencing your thoughts, reactions, and decisions.
- Practice interrupting internalized racism – Learn concrete strategies to challenge and disrupt internalized racism in yourself and your organization.
Prerequisite Learning
This is a deepening workshop designed to examine how institutional systems perpetuate inequality and provide focused exploration of specific justice topics—from analyzing dynamics of oppression to charting pathways toward reparation. This workshop builds on foundational concepts we explore in depth elsewhere. It is required that participants have previous experience engaging with Crossroads’ analysis of systemic racism by having participated in one or more of the following workshops:
- Toward Liberation (in-person or digital)
- Understanding and Analyzing Systemic Racism (the pre-2020 in-person)
