OVERVIEW
The Domination Default: Why Justice Work Keeps Failing and What We Can Do It About It
Why do so many well-intentioned efforts for inclusion and belonging fall short? The answer lies in something most of us can't see, systems of domination so deeply embedded in American life that they shape how we think, what we value, and what we believe is even possible. These systems don't just maintain inequality—they make exclusion and discrimination seem normal, natural, even desirable. And here's the uncomfortable truth: we've all been trained to accept and perpetuate these systems, often without realizing it. Without understanding how domination systems operate, inclusion and belonging efforts remain superficial. They get absorbed and neutralized by the very forces they aim to challenge. Real transformation requires us to see and confront the systems we've been taught not to question. This work isn't comfortable, but it's essential. Our capacity to build just institutions depends entirely on our willingness to recognize and interrupt the domination default.
Workshop Outcomes:
Participants in Crossroads’ Domination Default workshop will deepen their capacity to:
- Identify patterns of domination thinking in institutions, culture, and personal beliefs
- Understand and explain how interconnected belief systems sustain domination
- Recognize how they've internalized messages that normalize inequality and hierarchy
- Apply analytical tools to spot the domination default as it unfolds
- Develop actionable strategies to interrupt and dismantle domination in their work and communities

Accessing Digital Workshops - Technical Requirements
- Zoom account required – All participants must have a registered Zoom account to maintain a secure and confidential space.
- Use a computer for the best experience – We strongly recommend joining from a laptop or desktop. While you can access the workshop on a tablet or phone, you'll have limited ability to use all interactive features and shared workspaces.
What to Know Before Registering
Arrival & Attendance
Arrive on time – You must join before we complete the Community Agreements Process (usually within the first 30 minutes). Late arrivals cannot be admitted to protect the group's confidentiality.
Stay for the full workshop – We ask all participants to attend from beginning to end. Moving in and out of the workshop isn't permitted, as it disrupts the shared experience.
We understand technical issues happen and that remote work has its challenges—we're happy to accommodate these situations. However, if facilitators notice ongoing disengagement that isn't communicated, participants may be removed from the session.
