Cuimhneamh an Chláir has been gathering and archiving the stories of Co. Clare for the last 15 years. Those stories are strongly linked to place and landscape and to our sense of identity as Clare people. In 2024 Cuimhneamh an Chláir invites you to walk through those landscapes and stories in the company of local people who will act as your guides. They will introduce you to others along the way who will tell you stories of their own place.
The second Talking Landscapes walk on Sunday 24 March is a scenic historical walk in the townland of Cappabane, Scariff in East Clare. Cappabane native, Marie McMahon, is our guide. Treat yourself to spectacular views of Lough Derg, that are little known outside this area. We will walk the hills and countryside above the town of Scariff, taking in some of the East Clare Way. Meet Marie's family and neighbours and hear their take on Cappabane's historical sites and local folklore. Visit the old school with one of its 87 year old past pupils, see the mass rock from penal times, hear from the host of one of the rambling houses of Cappabane. We might even treat you to a song or two.
This walk is Easy to Moderate, 4 km over 2.5 hours.
Our guide Marie McMahon is from Cappabane, now living in Portugal where she runs Shamrock Walking Tours Ltd.
Walks will take place bi-monthly throughout the year, mostly in rural locations, but Clare towns will feature too. The walks are free but must be booked in advance. After booking you’ll be sent details of starting location, as well as Health and Safety information particular to the walks.
