Get ready to have a whale of a time!

Join us to meet Hope the whale, the WDC'S Scottish Dolphin Centre's life size inflatable humpback whale. Take a look inside Hope to discover the internal anatomy of humpbacks, from how they breathe to their vital feeding habits, as well as the dangers of plastic pollution in the ocean.

The inflatable whale offers visitors the chance to step inside its large frame and to take a 5-10 minute tour of the internal anatomy such as the ribcage, lungs and heart. They can also learn about some of the research and conservation work being undertaken to help protect these impressive leviathans. Humpback whales are increasingly regular visitors to Scottish waters but face fresh dangers such as being entangled in fishing gear, colliding with ships and exposure to underwater noise from human activities. 

During the day, we will also have a range of activities and creative stalls to get involved in and think about whales, including making unique whale prints. 

This event is free and open to all. Supported by WDCs Scottish Dolphin Centre and Sea Change Buckie. 

Everyone welcome, under 18s need to be accompanied by an adult. Please book a ticket for each person coming along – you need to book at least one adult ticket to bring under 18s with you. We expect this event to be busy, there queuing might be necessary. 

Whales are climate giants

How is climate change impacting whales and dolphins and why do we need to re-whale the ocean to achieve climate goals?

Whales and dolphins are acutely vulnerable and exposed to suffering the long and short-term consequences of climate change which are already impacting populations and threatening their very survival. They are living barometers of our impacts on the ocean and climate systems. By contrast whales and dolphins are helping us to mitigate climate change impacts.

A brand new Whale and Dolphin Conservation report makes a strong case for restoring populations of these climate giants to mitigate the effects of climate change and wider biodiversity loss.
