Travels with a Scalpel: an evening with Professor Chris Lavy

Join us at St Andrew's Church, Linton Road, to hear from surgeon and former CURE UK trustee Professor Chris Lavy about his new book, Travels with a Scalpel.

Chris has spent much of his career operating in sub-Saharan Africa. He moved to Malawi in 1996 and went on to establish Beit CURE International Hospital in Blantyre, followed by CURE hospitals in Zambia and Zimbabwe. He co-founded the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa, and today he is Professor of Orthopaedic and Tropical Surgery at Oxford. He was awarded an OBE for services to orthopaedics in 2007.

Travels with a Scalpel gathers the stories behind that work. Told with warmth and plenty of humour, it takes you from rural clinics to operating theatres, and into the lives of the children and families at the heart of it all. The book is also a portrait of how far surgery in the region has come over the past twenty years, and how much there still is to do.

Chris will talk about the book and the journey behind it, with time for questions afterwards. He will be on hand to sign copies too.

Your ticket includes entry, fizz, canapés, and a copy of the book to take home.

Every CURE hospital provides free surgery for children with treatable disabilities. Spending an evening with us is a lovely way to support that work.
