Waiting for Ringot - Rhino Fest 2024
Multiple dates and times
Chicago Dramatists, 60642
Description
The Walrus, whose real name is Paul, is sitting in his home, a pile of rubbish, in Nowhere Land. As mayor, he has important duties and today’s is “most important indeed.” The Walrus has been waiting decades for the return of the one whose mottos are “Peace and Love” and he is near exhaustion at the task. Energy and a renewed purpose are in abundance this morning, however, because according to the calendar, “He is coming.”
His sister Pam, who works in a shop, has arrived to check in on him. She reckons his shaky hold on reality may actually be destroyed if indeed Ringot is arriving today as promised. She says as much. He resists and she leaves annoyed and unsatisfied.
The Walrus vainly begins preparations.
His best and oldest mate, local constable, Sargent Pepper, arrives with Loretta Martin in tow. She and her beautification guild have chosen this area of Nowhere as their new pet project. Walrus is frantic because today is the day for Ringot to arrive and such a project would leave things topsy turvy. Pepper explains to Walrus that he tried to stop her but she is a formidable force. After a way-too-aggressive and smiling dictate, Loretta gets the two to tell her who is coming. Gob smacked exits to also prepare.
The two mates hope she does not return and make ready what they can themselves, Pepper on his horn, Walrus with his oratory. And his hat.
To their dismay, Loretta returns in a gown. Walrus retreats to his rubbish pile in exasperated tears and Pepper fears his mate is done for. Pam then walks on completely changed. She has seen Ringot and is there to impart his gift. In a two-minute stream of consciousness she shows the others what could have been.
Pam departs changed for the better.
Loretta departs changed for dinner.
And the Walrus and the Sargent are left to wait.
Change will not be forthcoming…
