Reading & Writing The Bloody Chamber

Sun 3 May 2026 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Cursive Knives, 969 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley, 4006

Explore the dark fairytale world of Angela Carter’s short stories, in a six-week creative reading and writing course.

Sundays at 5pm, from 3rd May

We'll start on 3rd May and have six weeks to read and write together, meeting every Sunday, with the final session being on 7th June.
Each session will run for 1.5-2 hours.

We’ll read a couple of stories each week and then meet to discuss them and experiment with your own writing, using prompts inspired by the collection. Think of it like a cross between a book club and a writing group. You'll never be asked to share your writing, but the group is intentionally small and by the end everyone will hopefully be friends!

Expect writing prompts, original folktales, secret messages, 1980s movies, and a lot of content warnings.

This one might be for you if:
◦ You want a more in-depth book club experience
◦ You’re looking to develop a creative writing practice
◦ You’re interested in feminist literature and fairytale retellings.

Your ticket includes:
◦ A new copy of the book, ready to collect in-store before we start
◦ Weekly meetups, every Sunday afternoon for six weeks, with drinks and snacks
◦ A donation to Literacy for Life, a First Nations-run charity training local people to deliver literacy classes in their communities

You'll be led through the course by Terri-Jane Dow. She is the owner of Cursive Knives and is a writer, critic, and workshop facilitator whose creative sessions blend reading, discussion and generative writing practice.

Concession tickets are available, please contact us: hello@cursiveknives.com.au
Tickets for this event are non-refundable. Store gift cards cannot be used for events (yet!).

Reading and writing on the unceded land of the Turrbal and Yuggera peoples. We respect and acknowledge Elders past and present, and all First Nations storytellers. Every story on our shelves sits alongside the world’s oldest living stories, reminding us that stories are not just read, but also lived and passed on.
