Course Overview
Participants will work in a small peer group to address challenging, real life complaints and adverse events scenarios drawn from their own clinical, teaching and management roles. Participants will be skilled and empowered to resolve conflict earlier on.
Topics may include:
- Resolving conflict and preventing complaints from escalating
- Handling strong emotions – anger, emotional distress, denial and collusion
- Addressing complaints from colleagues or other members of the clinical team
- Giving information and support to patients and families involved in adverse events
- Diffuse emotionally charged situations
- Feeding back adverse events reports to families
Learning outcomes
In this advanced clinical communication workshop participants will:
• Understand normal psychological reactions when facing difficult situations
• Know yourself better by increasing your self-awareness
• Identify personal learning objectives and develop strategies for addressing these within a supported peer learning group.
• Increase your communication effectiveness
This communication course will not only increase your emotional resilience but also your job satisfaction.

Dr Edile Murdoch
EC4H Senior Tutor
Dr Edile Murdoch is a consultant neonatologist in Edinburgh, previously in Cambridge. She gained expertise in managing maternity and neonatal services, adverse event processes and palliative care pathways in NHS England and NHS Scotland. Edile has worked with national, network and government teams to develop frameworks in managing risk and communicating with families and has co chaired the development of national UK Frameworks for managing perinatal palliative care. Edile recently became a national specialty advisor to the NHS England maternity and neonatal programme developing safety signal systems. Alongside this Edile has become a communications tutor for EC4H (Effective Communication For Healthcare) and is a trained mediator.
