This immersive and interactive workshop is aimed at Associate Medical Directors, Clinical Directors, Senior Nurse Managers, Consultants, and other Senior Clinicians and Managers. Participants will be empowered with the skills and confidence to have better conversations in difficult situations.This workshop is open to staff from all NHS health boards.

Overview
Participants will work in a small peer group and address communication challenges chosen from their clinical practice and management roles. Topics at senior clinicians’ courses often include:
• Addressing and preventing complaints
• Multi-disciplinary team work
• Chairing meetings
• Handling adverse events
• Addressing poor performance
• Appraisal & job planning
• Communicating as a senior clinician &/ or with managers/ clinical directors
Learning Outcomes
• Understand normal psychological reactions when facing difficult situations
• Know yourself better by increasing your self-awareness
• Identify personal learning objectives and develop strategies for addressing these within a supported peer learning group.
• Increase your communication effectiveness
This communication course will not only increase your emotional resilience but also your job satisfaction.
Pre-workshop preparation
Workshop participants have found it useful to think about how they currently communicate and what situations are particularly challenging. As the workshop is based on participants’ own situations we will be asking what you would like to work on.

Dr Edile Murdoch
EC4H Senior Tutor
Dr Edile Murdoch is a consultant neonatologist in Edinburgh, previously in Cambridge. She gained expertise in managing maternity and neonatal services, adverse event processes and palliative care pathways in NHS England and NHS Scotland. Edile has worked with national, network and government teams to develop frameworks in managing risk and communicating with families and has co chaired the development of national UK Frameworks for managing perinatal palliative care. Edile recently became a national specialty advisor to the NHS England maternity and neonatal programme developing safety signal systems. Alongside this Edile has become a communications tutor for EC4H (Effective Communication For Healthcare) and is a trained mediator.
