The Ethics of Art in Therapy: Ethical Considerations and Strategies for Therapeutic Art-Making with Clients
Sun Sep 8, 2024 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM EDT
Online, Zoom
Description
Creative Wellbeing Workshops, LLC with Rebecca Wilkinson, LPC, LCPAT, ATR-BC, ITR-CTT & Paige Scheinberg, MS, ATR-BC
In this engaging and experiential workshop, we will guide you through essential ethical considerations and impactful strategies for using art in therapy with clients as a non-art therapist.
Most psychotherapists (social workers, counselors, psychologists, and marriage and family therapists, etc.) recognize the expressive and healing benefits that using artmaking with their clients can produce. However, some are unclear about the ethics of doing so inside of their scope of competence and many are not aware of potential hazards that can present when introducing art into therapy, e.g. its potential to trigger clients, to evoke memories and feelings that clients may be unprepared to address, and to flood them emotionally.
This workshop will explore strategies and ethical considerations for non-art therapists to introduce art safely in their work with clients. From choosing art materials, guiding art directives, sharing and discussing imagery, to confidentiality and safely storing artwork, we will explore fundamental concerns that arise when engaging our clients in the artmaking process and ways to navigate those ethically and effectively. This workshop will include a review of essential art therapy theory and practice, experiential activities that illustrate these core principles, and simple art interventions that can ethically be used with clients.
Walk away with:
- Foundational knowledge of using art ethically and effectively with clients in session.
- Concrete strategies for creating, guiding, and discussing artwork with clients.
- Helpful handouts that can be used to enhance your ability to ethically and effectively use art with clients.
