What is this course about?

Step into the dynamic world of digital art creation with this two-day TouchDesigner boot camp! This course is ideal for artists, designers, and technologists interested in producing visuals for live music, interactive installations, audio-reactive art, and more.

You’ll learn to navigate TouchDesigner’s node-based interface and develop your own 2D and 3D visual projects. Whether you're just getting started or looking to build on existing skills, this workshop will provide practical knowledge and hands-on experience to help you create compelling digital content.

After the course, participants will have the opportunity to present their work at an exhibition inside ÅRT ĈLUB on September 7!

The course is led by Kyle Evans, Managing Director at dadageek and Professor of Immersive Media at the University of Texas. His instruction combines technical expertise with real-world applications, making this a valuable opportunity for anyone working in digital media.

What is TouchDesigner?

TouchDesigner is a visual programming environment designed for artists and technologists exploring generative and interactive visual content creation. Embraced globally by artists, programmers, creative coders, software designers, and performers, TouchDesigner is the go-to tool for crafting immersive performances, large-scale installations, and interactive artworks that captivate and inspire.

What will I learn?

Students in this course will walk away knowing:

  • Identify and use the basic operator types in TouchDesigner
  • Manipulate visual data in real time for creative applications
  • Create real-time 3D visual content
  • Design visuals that respond dynamically to audio input

Who is this course for?

Students who enroll in this course are:

  • Working artists looking to add new technology to their toolset,

  • technologists and programmers looking to explore creative approaches to tech,

  • musicians looking to add audio-reactive visuals to their music, and

  • anyone interested in the intersection of art, tech, and design!

This course is tailored for beginners and individuals new to TouchDesigner. However, those with intermediate experience can still benefit from refining their skills and discovering new techniques.

What is the class like?

This course will meet two times at POST in Houston, TX. The class is capped at 22 students, so you will have plenty of opportunities to connect with your instructor and ask questions. Your fellow students in the class will be an eclectic mix of artists, musicians, programmers, and creative humans excited to learn, create, and connect!

  • A Windows or Mac laptop

  • 3-button mouse is recommended

  • A recent version of TouchDesigner (free download)

Kyle Evans is a new media artist, sound designer, educator, and performer. He is a Professor of Immersive Media in the Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies at the University of Texas in Austin, a founding board member and Managing Director of the digital art educational non-profit dadageek, Artistic Director of the sound-art collective Rolling Ryot, and co-founder of the immersive art studio dadaLab. He has produced and presented a wide range of new media art performance and immersive installation artworks throughout North America and Europe at venues such as MUTEK San Francisco, Transmediale in Berlin, the International Computer Music Conference at Columbia University, The Dallas Museum of Art, the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Vancouver New Music Festival, and the GLI.TC/H festival in Chicago. His writings and artworks have been presented in several academic and popular publications including the Leonardo Music Journal, Computer Music Magazine, Neural Magazine, and Popular Science Magazine.
