What is this course about?
Join us for an exciting two-day immersive audio workshop designed for musicians and sound designers eager to explore the world of spatial audio with Ableton Live! This course will introduce you to the essential hardware and software tools needed to start creating immersive audio systems. You'll learn how to design various spatial audio setups and see live demos of software tools driving multi-channel output. Beyond the technical basics, we'll dive into spatial audio mixing and compositional techniques, primarily using Ableton Live, with concepts applicable to other DAWs.
After the course, participants will have the opportunity to present their work at an exhibition inside ÅRT ĈLUB on September 7!
The workshop is led by Kyle Evans, Managing Director at dadageek, Professor of Immersive Media at the University of Texas, and Artistic Director of the spatial sound collective Rolling Ryot. His experience bridges creative practice and technical expertise, making this a valuable opportunity for anyone looking to elevate their audio production skills.
What is Spatial Audio?
Spatial audio, sometimes referred to as surround sound, expands sound and music outside the bounds of a typical two-speaker stereo system. Spatial audio systems can be simple, such as quadraphonic with 4 speakers, or they can be very complex and experimental, implementing dozens of channels of audio surrounding the listener in many positions. This approach allows artists to create immersive soundscapes that evoke movement and enhance the emotional and narrative impact of any sonic experience.
What will I learn?
Students in this course will walk away knowing:
An understanding of the hardware and software tools needed for spatial audio
How to use free Max for Live devices to create multi-channel audio output
How to design creative spatial audio systems for performances or installations
Compositional and mixing techniques for creating with spatial audio systems
