Escape from Model Land
You're welcome to join us for the final Data Science: Ethics & Society Reading Group session of 2023, on Thursday 14th December 2023 at 12:00-13:00.
It is FREE to attend, but places are limited so please sign up to reserve your spot! Ticket sales end on Monday 4th December at 17:00.
We will be discussing Escape from Model Land: How Mathematical Models Can Lead Us Astray and What We Can Do About It, by Dr Erica Thompson:
Drawing on contemporary examples from finance, climate and health policy, Erica Thompson explores what models are, why we need them, how they work and what happens when they go wrong.
This is not a book that argues we should do away with models, but rather, that we need to properly understand how they are constructed - and how some of the assumptions that underlie the models we use can have significant unintended consequences.
See our GitHub page for more information.
Please consider either buying the book from a local, independent bookseller, or picking up a used copy online, or borrowing from your local library. We are confirming a discount for attendees- you will receive details of this once it is finalised.
