Klara and the Sun, Kazuo Ishiguro
Join us at the Data Ethics & Society Reading Group on Wednesday 25th November at 12:00-13:00.
The event is FREE to attend, but places are limited so please sign up to reserve your spot! (Registration closes on Friday 20th November at 17:00)
This session we will be discussing Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The novel asks questions about artificial intelligence, human relationships, and what it means to love and care for others, as seen through the eyes of Klara, an 'Artificial Friend'.
There is also a film adaptation coming out on 23 October, so now is the perfect time to get reading (or watching)!
Reviews
"I’ll go for broke and call Klara and the Sun a masterpiece that will make you think about life, mortality, the saving grace of love: in short, the all of it." - Anne Enright, The Guardian
"Ishiguro doesn’t get tangled up in the complexities of neural networks, machine learning, algorithms or the difficulties of getting computers to understand symbolic logic. But it doesn’t matter how Klara’s mind works, because she isn’t really a robot. She’s a much older form of artificial intelligence, a much older kind of artificial friend: she’s a fictional character. " - Thomas Jones, London Review of Books
