Description
Hoagy Carmichael wrote some of the best-known songs in the American songbook, like "Star Dust" and "Georgia on My Mind". He also wrote more different kinds of songs than just about anyone, from early jazz to popular hits to cowboy songs and the songs for an entire animated film about bugs. We'll sing all the best and the best of the rest, and we'll give a little insight into how Hoagy grew from a poor Hoosier boy into one of the very few true singer-songwriters of his day.
Dave Schweisguth is a singer who especially loves overlooked songs and interesting lyrics. His previous shows at Martuni's — all sold out! — explored harmony in quarantine (2021), the philosophy of lyricist Yip Harburg (2020), and the long dark night of his two-year kitchen renovation (2019). He also wrote and emceed Society Cabaret's "Songs and Their Stories" showcases, which spotlighted the works and lives of songwriters Johnny Mercer, Carolyn Leigh, Jerome Kern and Frank Loesser.
Jessen Langley has been itching to work with Dave since she saw his brilliant Yip Harburg show back in early 2020. She has been featured in one of Russell Deason’s “2+2” cabaret showcases, and her last show, “It’s the Girl!”, in 2021 featured a diverse selection of songs spanning a century of music. Diversity of genres is one reason why she loves singing with Oakland Symphony Chorus. She also previously sang with a Hamilton cover band and once took a summer job singing in a jazz club in a small city in China.
Joe Wicht has been one of Martuni's house pianists since 2007. Voted Best LGBT Musician by the readers of the B.A.R., Joe most recently served as MD and arranger for "Encore" at the New Conservatory Theatre Center, where he has worked on and off since 1997. He has been the MD for musical revues and cabaret acts focusing on the works of Rodgers & Hart, Lerner & Loewe, Kander & Ebb, Johnny Mercer, Stephen Sondheim, Kurt Weill, Jacques Brel, and Noel Coward.
Roberta Drake has been playing drums in theaters, clubs, restaurants, weddings and corporate events in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1977. She has played in over 160 musical productions which include many original shows, working with writers, music directors, singers, actors and dancers. She has been a member of the Tom Shaw Trio since 2008.
Martuni's is one of San Francisco's best places to see up and coming cabaret and theater performers, as well as being SF's premier piano bar and the home of its most generous cocktails. At the corner of Valencia and Market streets, Martuni's is easily reached by BART or Muni.
