Parting The Waters follows Michele Kuvin Kupfer, a member of the 1980 Israeli Olympic swim team, as she sets out – four decades later – to reunite with her old teammates and compete in the 2022 Maccabiah Games. Once a rising star who came of age in the pool during the 1981 Maccabiah Games, Michele now returns in the wake of personal loss, seeking healing, connection, and a second act. As the film traces her journey from elite athlete to master swimmer, it also dives into the larger story of Jewish identity, resilience, and community, and shows that it’s never too late to find your light.
Since submitting to festivals, our film has had an incredibly encouraging start. Parting the Waters premiered at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, where it was awarded First Prize, Best Feature-Length Documentary. At the Chelsea Film Festival, it was the only documentary to receive two screenings, and at the Miami Jewish Film Festival we sold out as one of the festival’s opening films. These early responses have been deeply affirming, and they reinforce why our film is resonating with everyone who sees it.
This special screening will feature director, Michele Kupfer for a post-film conversation.
