The Georgina Jackson Trio
Sun 13 Oct 2024 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM BST
Dawkes Music, SL6 8BT
Description
Singer & Trumpet player extraordinaire, Georgina Jackson is a musical force to be reckoned with. This session with her trio will feature a swinging mix of vocals and brass with numbers from Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra to Dusty Springfield and everything in-between. Georgina put on a sold-out gig on the Dawkes Live stage in 2021 and we can't wait to welcome her back with some new material.
Georgina Jackson
After acquiring a strange and somewhat unfashionable obsession with Jazz and Big Band music at an early age, (and in Wigan!) Georgina began her musical career working as a professional trumpet player almost everywhere up, down, left and right of the country. Working for years with many famous faces, such as Frank Sinatra Junior, Nancy Sinatra and Seal and touring Big Bands in Concert Halls, television and radio.
Harbouring a desire to wear a posh frock rather than the same as 'the lads' in the band, Georgina decided to make a dash for the front mike! Setting up her own Big Band to play at a local ballroom was the first step to fulfilling her frock and singing ambitions, and when the audience didn't booo (but actually cheered!) she decided that she would like to do it again, quite a few times actually!
Having sung, played trumpet and led various sized bands with miscellaneous musicians in some very miscellaneous venues, Georgina decided to record and release her first CD. With support from Jazz FM (CD of the week) and Sir Michael Parkinson ''til there was you' climbed to the dizzy heights of Number 8 in the HMV jazz charts. The critical success of her first album led to Georgina landing her dream job at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz club in London as resident singer with The Ronnie Scotts Jazz Orchestra, where she has performed most months for the past 10 years!!
Her long awaited second album 'Watch What Happens' was released in June 2012. The first single 'Change Partners' shot to number 1 in the iTunes Jazz Chart and the London Evening Standard awarded the album CD of the week in July 2012. Following this The BBC Radio 2 Big Band invited Georgina to perform a tribute concert to Peggy Lee which was broadcast a number of times and very well received, this led to a national tour of Peggy’s swinging songbook and live appearances on Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night
Georgina now works internationally as a Cabaret Artiste performing her ‘One Woman’ entertaining trumpet/ vocal shows on the world's most prestigious cruise lines. Often found performing her show upon the iconic Cunard Queen Mary II as she sails out of New York. She is also to be found singing with the Echoes of Ellington Big Band, The Jazz Repertory and is in great demand performing up and down the country with her trio show and with guest soloist and workshop dates with Big Bands both here and In Europe. Recent notable performances have included, BBC TV”s ‘The Big Band Proms’ at the Royal Albert Hall, North Sea Jazz Festival and as a headline performer at International trumpet conferences in Hollywood, Naples and San Paulo in Brazil.
As a live artist Georgina’s charming and unique performances make her audience laugh and cry in turn, delivering a thoroughly entertaining evening.
''Her marvellous voice and musicianship ... has been a delight.'' - Sir Terry Wogan
“I didn't think I'd ever fall in love with a girl from Wigan, but I did tonight. Absolutely marvellous” - Bruce Forsyth
“Really very good indeed....well worth supporting.” - Sir Michael Parkinson
"A smoky voiced singer ... who has made impressive appearances with the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra, she covers all the bases on this big-band, orchestral and small band set. As a vocalist, Jackson is equally at home with standards from More to Lover and Michel Legrand's sultry title track." - The Times
"Several UK divas ... have produced Peggy Lee-themed shows and albums lately, but here’s a paradox. The star of this classy new trawl through the Great American Songbook, which has no stated Lee link whatever, recalls her style more vividly than any of the others. Check out the gentle delivery ... you will recognise much of Peggy’s velvety warmth and spot-on intonation. Even on up-tempo numbers her phrasing retains its unhurried charm and musicality." - London Evening Standard
The Band:
- Georgina Jackson (Trumpet/Vocals)
- Jim Watson (Piano)
- Tom Farmer (Bass)
