MARTIN SPEAKE (Alto Saxophone)
Martin originally studied classical saxophone at Trinity College of Music, London. At that time there were no jazz courses in London, but he met some future jazz musicians at the college, including pianist Simon Purcell, saxophonist Mark Lockheart and the members of the saxophone quartet 'Itchy Fingers' who were studying at the Royal Academy of Music. He toured Europe, South America, Africa and the USA with 'Itchy Fingers' appearing at major jazz festivals.
After leaving the group Martin has gone on to develop his own projects which have been many and diverse. He has established himself as a leading saxophonist, composer and improviser. He is at home in all manner of musical scenarios including free improvisation, luscious ballads and up-tempo bop.
Martin has recorded 25 albums under his own name across a vast range of musical genres. He has performed with leading musicians around the world including; Don Weller, Jim Mullen, Dave Cliff, Julian Arguelles, Loose Tubes and many many more. He is also the lead alto saxophonist in the London Jazz Orchestra (LJO).
Alongside his professional playing commitments Martin has been a committed jazz educator for over 30 years. He teaches at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Find out more via martinspeake.com
