Martin Scorsese is often lauded as one of cinema’s great chroniclers of masculinity: a pioneer in the field of “boy movies.” Yet, throughout his filmography, his female characters frequently occupy pivotal narrative and thematic roles. This month we’re pairing Casino (1995) and The Age of Innocence (1993), two wildly different Scorsese settings, to dig into how he handles female agency, desire, and power. We’ll talk about what these women do in his films: how they expose the men around them, complicate their stories, sometimes bring the whole thing down.

Please watch (at home, before you arrive to the genre circle) Casino (1995) and The Age of Innocence (1993), and be ready to discuss the movies together.

Only purchase a ticket if you intend to come. We are unable to offer refunds for tickets - the small fee goes to the administrative costs of running this event and DC Movie Club. If for some reason you purchased a ticket and can no longer attend, please reach out so we can offer your spot to another. Thank you for your understanding!

FAQ:

Q: What exactly is a genre circle?
A: Think of it as a book club… but for movies, and focused on a single genre or theme. Instead of our typical large form, open ended happy hour type events, a genre circle is a small, discussion-driven gathering where members can connect more deeply, share perspectives, and nerd out over the finer points of the month’s topic.

Q: Where do I go when I get there?
A: This event will be located in the reception area at Angelika Pop-Up Theater. Look to the right once you're in the door and you can't miss us. Keep an eye out for a sign and friendly faces!

Q: What if I’ve never been to a movie club event before?
A: Perfect! Genre circles are intentionally designed to be welcoming to newcomers as a smaller, less overwhelming space to discuss beloved movies. The groups are small, so you’ll get to know people quickly, and there’s no pop quiz on obscure trivia—just good conversation and shared enthusiasm for movies.

Q: Why is the capacity so limited?
A: The whole point of genre circles is to have intimate discussions where everyone gets a chance to speak. Smaller groups make for richer conversation and a more comfortable atmosphere. Think cozy dinner party, not crowded premiere. If you end up buying a ticket and can no longer make it, please reach out so we can release your ticket to someone on the waitlist!

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Just yourself! If you're so inspired, feel free to bring any burning questions about the films, about Movie Club, etc. Angelika has a full bar/limited snacks if you are so inclined.

Q: When should I arrive?
The genre circle will start promptly at 6:30 to make sure people are outta there by 8:30. We encourage you to show up a bit early to meet the other attendees, grab a snack/beverage, and get settled. The event host will be there to greet you and answer any questions you may have!
