LA Death Mic

Sun Nov 16, 2025 13:00 - 15:00 Verdugo Park, 91208

At LA Death Mic, join me and the trees for an outdoor, death-themed afternoon of performing, spectating, and reflection. Sharing your stories of grief is a gift to those who get to hear them -- we all get to feel less alone in our own. Death Mic happens just before the New Moon: this point in the lunation, when the night sky is perfectly dark, is a symbolic moment for letting go, connecting with endings, and preparing for a new cycle. It's a ripe moment for gathering with neighbors and friends in nature, creatively sharing our stories of loss, and having a bite to eat together.

The evening will entail:

A toast:

To our beloved lost ones.

A reflection:

I'll offer a prompt to get you reflecting on what your relationship with death wants to teach you about your life now.

A death- and grief-themed Mic (everyone in attendance will perform!):

Share your story of loss, through any creative medium you love.

A snack:

After visiting these depths, we'll take a breath and refuel with a snack together before parting ways.

Here are examples of what you could share at Death Mic:

  • the story of loss that your heart has been aching to speak
  • a comedy routine about visiting your parent with dementia
  • absurd performance art that definitely has something to do with death even if we can't... put our finger on... exactly.... what
  • your native culture's death-ritual dance
  • the poem or book passage you turn to in heartbreak
  • the song you and your dead best friend used to sing to each other on the phone

... etc. It need not be polished, long, memorized, or even your own creation. Get sad with it. Get weird. Get funny. Death has everything in it... so take this wherever your heart most needs you to go. It's all allowed. This is a cozy, supportive space for you to try something out. Just make sure it has to do with death, loss, transition (metaphorical death totally works! eg divorce, retiring, moving, etc), or new beginnings. 5-minute limit. I repeat: everyone will perform.

LA Death Mic is hosted by Jane Miller. Jane is a death doula, energy worker, and actress. She hosts death events, sits with the dying, and helps people move with transformative inner deaths. She's obsessed with movies and dark comedy, and loves dancing along the blurred line between theater and reality, actor and character.
