Beyond Silence — Saxophone & Piano, Played at the Same Time

One musician. Two instruments. At the same time.

Beyond Silence is Denis Patrickson's original project: music written for saxophone and piano, and performed by one person on both instruments at once — left hand on the keys, saxophone in the mouth.

The music blends cinematic, classical, new age and a touch of pop into something closer to a film score than a recital: meditative, lyrical, and unmistakably his own. Many of these pieces were written and recorded inside a one-of-a-kind motorhome that Denis built himself, with a piano fitted inside it — a travelling studio where changing landscapes and quiet mornings became part of the music.

He built the instrument, too. Not the mechanism — the body. A grand piano case, shaped by hand in a home workshop over a few weeks, built to house a digital piano and give it the weight and presence of a grand on stage. It is why this instrument goes where an acoustic grand cannot: into a lavender field, into a camper van, down a narrow staircase into a basement in Farringdon.

THE EVENING

Two sets with a short interval, around two hours. Music from the Beyond Silence album, recent singles including The Dawn's Tale, and new pieces performed live for the first time. The bar is open before, during the interval and after, and Denis stays to talk afterwards.

THE VENUE

PIANO Smithfield, 14 Long Lane, London EC1A 9PN. An intimate basement room with a gold grand piano and a licensed bar — two minutes from Barbican, five from Farringdon (Elizabeth line, Thameslink, Circle, Metropolitan).
