A Serious Little Comic Book: The Uninvited Host, Tourism in Goa, and Art as Resistance
Wed 1 May 2024 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
King's College London, Strand Campus (Strand Building S2.31), WC2R 2LS
Description
Together, the artists Angela Ferrão and Maria Vanessa de Sa and writer R. Benedito Ferrão created the comic book The Uninvited Host: Goa and the Parties not Meant for its People (2023), conceiving of it as a research-based comic/zine that could provide a useful and succinct tool to collate, explain, and represent geographic-specific issues. Goa is one of the most visited locations in South Asia, a fact that results in the arrival of fifteen million tourists per annum. This onslaught of visitors has threatened the territory’s coastal ecology while also increasing noise pollution. Using the comic book, Dr. Ferrão’s presentation will explore how Goa became the tourism destination it is now following the end of 451 years of Portuguese colonialism in the region. Simultaneously, the presentation will also gauge what the future holds for a place whose identity has become synonymous with party-tourism even as Goans have expressed concern about their marginalization in their own homeland. Amidst this, the talk will underscore the role of art as a chronicle and mode of local resistance.
This will be a hybrid event. Please only request a ticket if you would like to attend in person. If you would like to join virtually please contact DLLC@kcl.ac.uk for the link.
