Description

When I desire you
a part of me
is gone.

― Anne Carson, Eros the Bittersweet

Start the new year with Devotion Sunday School. Stare headlong into the sun—summon the new, reflect on the past, cherish it all.

We return for another term of Devotion Sunday School, a weekly programme of practice focussed writing workshops. Across six sessions we will explore what it means to be a writer, what it means to be devoted, what it means to be together in a solitary practice, what it means to come back over and over, what it means to use our desires and addictions and obsessions in service to our writing.

Each Sunday Sophie will begin the session with poems, extracts from essays and fiction, music videos, film clips and songs. With guided prompts and a wide range of reference material from writers and artists including Lucille Clifton, Sappho, Edna St Vincent Millay, Julian of Norwich, Agnés Varda, W.G. Sebald, Bhanu Kapil, Nina Simone, Octavia Butler, Petrarch and Andrei Tarkovsky, we will write together without the pressure of needing to produce ‘finished’ work: as always, our focus in Devotion is on the practice of writing itself, and what that attention to our practice in the moment can teach us.

Devotion is suitable for all genres of writer and all levels of experience, from beginners to professional writers.

Devotion: Sunday School will run every Sunday between 12 midday (GMT) and 13.30 for six weeks.

In order to nurture a regular writing practice, and a sense of community, we encourage attendees to come every week and are offering tickets for the entire term only. We will continue to offer a sliding scale, based on trust and kindness, and hope this offers people a fair pricing system dependent on their availability and income.

Pricing structure:

We are offering a limited amount of full price tickets that include a 121 with Sophie on your writing practice.

We are offering a full price ticket for waged attendees.

We are offering a non means-tested concession price based on trust.

Our scholarship places have now been filled.

We have created a devoted Instagram, where we will post announcements and events and share ideas, wisdoms and affirmations on nurturing a personal writing practice. Through the account we hope to reach out and touch, make contact and extend our community of writers and readers.
