The PHI/Spotlight Webinars are run by the Local Knowledge and Intelligence Service in the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities. These events give you the opportunity to hear about public health intelligence tools and resources from the teams who work on them.

This webinar is hosted by the Mental Health Intelligence Team (MHIT) and NHSE’s mental health analysis team, who will be presenting a new report on Suicide in people with severe mental health problems.

The purpose of the new report is to:

  • provide important intelligence on people that died by suicide who had been referred to secondary mental health services in the 5 years before death (some people in this group only had a referral to services, but a larger proportion had contact with community or outpatient services, or stayed in hospital as an inpatient)
  • compare intelligence for these people, (referred to as the ‘mental health population’) to people who were not referred to secondary mental health services in the 5 years before death (the ‘non-mental health population’)
  • provide intelligence on the mental health population’s use of secondary mental health services in the year before death

The intelligence in the report is on people aged 18 to 74 only. It presents the latest data, deaths registered in 2022 to 2024, and trends starting from 2015 to 2017. Data is available for England (persons, men, women) and region

This webinar will provide:

  1. An overview of the report
  2. Guidance on how the report can be used
  3. An opportunity for discussion and Q&A.

The webinar will also provide a brief update on intelligence on the Mortality for adults referred to secondary mental health services (aged 18 to 74) and Excess mortality for people referred to secondary mental health services (aged 18 to 74) indicators for the period 2022 to 2024 found in the Adult mental health and wellbeing profile: September 2026 and the Excess under 75 mortality rates in adults with serious mental illness - NHS England Digital. This includes the overall indicators and figures for cancer, cardiovascular disease, liver disease and respiratory disease.
