Debunking the Myth of the Short Story

Why is it that for so long the short story has been perceived as the lowly cousin of the much- fêted novel? Join award-winning short story writers Geraldine Mills and Tanya Farrelly, who will debunk this myth by discussing the unique impact of this precise form. They will also read from their latest collections "Survival Games" and "The Marionette and the Maestro" and discuss the importance of independent publishing houses. With their energetic and passionate championship of short fiction, this event will bring you to a whole new level of appreciation of this undervalued genre. 

Geraldine Mills is the author of four collections of short stories, six poetry collections and two children’s novels. She is winner of the Hennessy New Irish Writer Award, RTÉ Penguin short story award and many more. Her short fiction is taught on the USA summer programme at the Burren College of Art.

Tanya Farrelly is the author of five books: three short fiction collections and two novels. Her debut ‘When Black Dogs Sing’ won the Kate O’Brien Award. She holds a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing from Bangor University. She teaches at numerous institutions and was appointed Arts Council Writer-in-Residence at NUI Galway in 2021.
