CADET A is the not-quite-acoustic, psychedelic side project of United Ghosts’ Axel Ray. Conceived mostly under lockdown in Los Angeles, Ray’s solo effort takes us on a fuzzy, trippy space pop ride, stripping back the sound while using all the touchstones of his past work with United Ghosts¬—psychedelia, layered guitars, paisley underground, touches of electronica, girl group heartbreak—plus a healthy helping of glockenspiel.
A self-confessed vinyl obsessive, CADET A went through a phase of being fascinated with obscure 60s and 70s compilation records during writing. These odd mix tape-like collections of psych pop, glam, soul, space rock and plenty of one-hit wonders kept things interesting while Ray also immersed himself in soundtracks, JAMC’s Stoned And Dethroned, newer records such as Public Service Broadcasting’s Bright Magic and Karen O/Dangermouse’s collaboration Lux Prima as well as a CADET A favorite of 2021, Homecoming by Du.Blonde, whose label Daemon TV will now be involved in the spring album release.
The first single Come See Me came out on Feb 25th, accompanied by a video directed by LA filmmaker Sarah Bitley in which CADET A meets a musical, flower-eating alien. BBC6music’s Steve Lamacq was an instant supporter, spinning the single on both his daytime and” Six Music Fix” shows. The full album will be out on April the 28th on Du Blonde’s DAEMON TV label as a limited cassette accompanied by a fanzine as well as all digital platforms.
MODERN TIME MACHINES - The haunting, dream-like melodies of Los Angeles-based shoegaze veterans Modern Time Machines have been described as a "noisy, romantic hurricane for those who like their rock with intricate layers" (Buzzbands LA).
Reverb-drenched boy/girl vocal harmonies feature heavily in the band's feedback-laced love songs, which have drawn comparisons to noiseniks such as M83, Sonic Youth, and Lush.
After gaining momentum from their earliest local shows and SXSW touring, the band received strong radio support from L.A.'s KROQ 106FM, and were invited to perform on Adult Swim's cult hit TV show, The Eric Andre Show, graced by the string arrangements of Oscar-shortlisted film composer Chanda Dancy. Hailed as "good-feeling indie rockers" by A.V. Club, MTM's music can be heard alongside bands such as They Might Be Giants in the award-winning 2020 independent feature "Dramarama", and on numerous films on Hulu and Netflix.
In July 2024, Deadline.com premiered MTM's new single + music video "Ghost Signs (Sleight of Hand)", a bittersweet time travel tale of L.A. gentrifcation and changes.
Characterized by NBC LA as "a dreamy song [that] is evocative and upliftinly esoteric, fitting the SoCal-flavored mood of this memory lane adventure", the song's accompanying music video is a historic Los Angeles time warp adventure. Directed by Modern Time Machines frontman Ben Golomb, the video costars L.A. Kitsch King Charles Phoenix as a time travel salesman.
An upcoming MTM music collaboration with the late Grammy-winning songwriting legend Allee Willis (Earth Wind & Fire, Pet Shop Boys) is coming soon - stay tuned.
