FACT/SF initiated their PORT (Peer Organized Reciprocal Touring) model in 2017 with the ultimate aim to cultivate an open platform where any choreographer can match with another choreographer to embark on reciprocal touring. In Summer 2022, DISCO RIOT ventured to San Francisco to share a program with FACT/SF at ODC Theater. Now, FACT/SF journeys to San Diego to bring the reciprocal touring model full circle.
FACT/SF is thrilled to make its San Diego debut this November, with two distinct trios, For a and un petit peu. For a is a vibrant, full-bodied, and unrelenting retrospective set to Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. un petit peu is much more compact, danced to pop songs, and inspired by the types of dance routines often found at basketball games during halftime. un petit peu is part of FACT/SF's larger project, Half Time, Full Out, which will have its full premiere in San Francisco in August 2024. FACT/SF works will be performed by Company Members Keanu Brady, Katherine Neumann, and LizAnne Roman Roberts.About the upcoming performances, FACT/SF Artistic Director shares, "I grew up in San Diego, and I took my very first dance classes here. Even though my career has taken me all over the world, it hasn't brought me back to San Diego until now. The return feels incredibly special, and I'm so grateful to be working with DISCO RIOT to make this happen.”
FACT/SF is a San Francisco-based contemporary dance company, founded in 2008 by Charles Slender-White as a platform for organizing collaborators, building community, and creating choreography. FACT/SF regularly performs in the San Francisco Bay Area, maintains a core group of local collaborators, and has developed an extensive international network of partners. FACT/SF has premiered 42 works, with tours throughout the US, across Russia, and to Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Macedonia. FACT/SF’s Fieldwork programs provide support and material resources to contemporary dance artists outside FACT/SF.
DISCO RIOT will present Cenotes, an original work by DISCO RIOT Director, Zaquia Mahler Salinas. Cenotes is a performance work about ritual, magic, and how to dive into or surface out of dark places. The work harnesses the power and meaning of water as a vessel for transformation, ancestral connection, time travel, and portal building. Alongside Zaquia, Cenotes features dancers Lauren Christie, Martin Anthony Dorado, Jasmyn Hamblin, Odessa Uno, and an original music composition by Jonny Tarr.
Founded in 2018, DISCO RIOT is focused on creating equitable and accessible opportunities to independent, local movement-artists. We design platforms to elevate more diverse dance voices, and to encourage the local dance scene to work together, rather than in competition. Our mission is to grow social consciousness and connection through collaborative movement-based arts. Our leadership, staff, and collaborators include a mix of artists and allies who strive to make San Diego a better place for dance, and provide an educational space that reflects contemporary and progressive professional realities. Over the past five years, DISCO RIOT has grown from a fledgling seed organization to one of the most influential and respected dance establishments in San Diego. We have accomplished this through innovative approaches to programming, artist relations, and connection to the community at large.
