September/November: Joyce Lien-Kushner
Drop In, Spiral Out Class Descriptions
Aisha: This class was built on the foundations of release and modern techniques, floorwork exploration, improvisation practices and having fun! Finding efficiency in the pathways of the body to bring awareness to the connections of body+mind+soul+space make for a perfect Monday morning blues remedy! It’s suggested that the limbs are covered for this class — long sleeves, pants, knee pads and socks.
Aisha Reddick (she/her) is an African American/Filipino movement artist and instructor based in San Diego, California. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at California State University, Long Beach in Fall 2021. Since graduating, Aisha has made work that has been presented across the west coast for various concerts, festivals and sharings. Aisha has had the pleasure of working with various independent artists and companies between San Diego and Los Angeles, whose influence has helped shape her own craft. In her practice, Aisha finds real fulfillment in moving between juxtaposing gentle and aggressive powers to create a flow into and through the body to find ways, basically, feel good. Presently, Aisha shares this way of moving at DISCO RIOT, Culture Shock San Diego, and Helix Charter High School.
Joyce: Joyce’s class draws from various disciplines that mirror her training, including floorwork, Countertechnique, release, Limon, Cunningham, improvisation, and somatic practices. We play with weight, dynamics, and gestural movements, with a strong emphasis on floorwork technique. We get comfortable with pushing, pulling, rolling, sliding, as we build strength and ease in transitioning in and out of the floor. We explore new pathways of sequencing through the body, find various ways to initiate movement, and develop ease in movement, allowing us to dance bigger and freer.
Joyce Lien Kushner is a SoCal native, trained in modern, contemporary, ballet and jazz, and a certified Progressing Ballet Technique® instructor. As a dance teaching artist, Joyce has trained dancers of all ages, having performed and collaborated with artists throughout California – Modern City Repertoire, Strong Pulse Dance, Epiphany Dance Theater, Surhabi Suraf, Sarah Bush Dance, Amy Lewis, Five Feet Dance, and Chris Black Dance. In 2015, Joyce founded TILTshift Dance while living and working in San Francisco. Now in San Diego, she continues to teach throughout the city, make and collaborate on work, and holds space and provides opportunities for other dance artists to create and present work through TILTshift Dance. At the end of 2023, she was awarded an 18-month artist residency by NTC Foundation in ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station to help further these endeavors. Joyce is also a proud DISCO RIOT board member.
