Workshops
☆ 12pm: Dancing en lo Sucio Workshop with Amelia Rose Estrada & Gabriel Mata
This workshop will explore the vibrant possibilities of expression, identity, and inclusivity through movement. We will focus on weight sharing techniques and narrative building while immersing ourselves in a rich tapestry of Latinx/e music and aesthetics. This workshop is for everyone.
Amelia Rose Estrada and Gabriel Mata are Latinx queer artists in Washington DC. Their work as choreographers, educators, and interdisciplinary performers explore issues of identity and intergenerational relationality. Through dance and voice, they articulate the nuanced narratives of their marginalized experiences, challenging societal norms. Their work serves as a vibrant tapestry, weaving together the threads of queerness and Latinx heritage. As educators, they empower the next generation with tools for self-expression and resilience. Intergenerational relationality is a focal point of their work and they aim to bridge gaps and foster understanding between people of different backgrounds and experiences. These artists illuminate the diverse hues of their existence, celebrating queerness and Latinidad in a harmonious dance of cultural affirmation.
☆ 1:30pm: De-constructing Gendered Movement Workshop with Riy Mutakabbir
Using story-telling, writing, consensual touch and guided improvisation, this workshop explores intrinsic and societal restrictions we place on our moving bodies. This workshop will examine the innate and learned behaviors that have influenced our movement vocabulary. Okay with tactile redirection is a plus. No previous experience required, but always helpful. This workshop is for queer folx.
Riyadah "Riy" Mutakabbir is a movement artist whose style has been called "innovative, unexpected and slightly erotic." At 17 years old, they were admitted into UCLA's Dance major which resulted in the development of their own unique style composed of hip hop musicality, modern and sensuality. During their undergraduate career, they co-founded a dance group called Taste The Rainbow that celebrated resistance in a world that too often denies queer people’s existence. Their films have been shown at the Theyfriend Performance Festival and will also be shown at Queer Movement Festival this year. They hold an MFA in Dance: Creative Practice from Saint Mary’s College of California and a BA in Dance with a minor Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender* and Queer Studies from University of California, Los Angeles and plan to continue their somatic education in the future. It is Riy’s mission to provide dance spaces to people of all genders and races to create a more inclusive dance community.
DISCO RIOT is committed to accessibility and holds with great care the needs of our entire community, especially those who are disabled. We encourage you to contact Alyssa Rose, Program Coordinator (email: operations@disoriot.org) regarding any specific accommodation needs.
