DISCO RIOT has teamed up with El Flow, a new culture-based Latin and street dance space to bring you a night of social dancing! This night is meant to serve as a queer/trans-centered space where we can dance in contact with each other. In one room, there will be a Bachata class with juanito xochipilli conoro, followed by a dance social, where attendees have the opportunity to dance freely in the space together. In the other room, Eric Geiger will lead a Contact Improvisation class, followed by a classic CI Jam. Both classes will be held from 7-8pm, and jam/social from 8-10pm. This event is $25 for general admission, and $15 for artist/student/low-Income. This is a substance and alcohol free event.

No one turned away for lack of funds. This event is ADA accessible. DISCO RIOT is committed to accessibility and holds with great care the needs of our entire community, especially those who are disabled and economically marginalized. We encourage you to contact Alyssa Rose, our accessibility specialist, (email: operations@disoriot.org) regarding any specific accommodation needs or waiver of admission fees

Meet juanito xochipilli conoro:

This beginner friendly bachata class centers joy connection and liberation for queer trans and gender expansive dancers of all bodies and backgrounds. Rooted in a degendered framework students are invited to explore lead and follow roles on their own terms with no assumptions just options. We move at a gentle pace guided by consent, curiosity and collective care. As a guest in the Afro Dominican lineage of bachata, juanito offers this class with deep respect for its cultural history and acknowledge the ways social dance has often excluded or harmed queer and trans people. This space seeks to reimagine bachata as a practice of healing play and self expression. No partner or experience needed just bring your full self. Come move in ways that feel good to affirm who you are and remind us that dance can be a place of resistance and belonging.

juanito xochipilli conoro (they/them) is a queer nonbinary displaced Indigenous dancer rooted in the ancestral lands of the Guachichil people. With over 20 years of dance experience, their movement journey began with ballet folklórico and expanded into cumbia quebradita, salsa, and bachata. Since falling in love with bachata in 2006, juanito has embraced social dance as a space for joy, connection and self-expression. In 2011 they began intentionally breaking binaries on traditional Afro Latine dance floors and in 2014 co-founded Duo Bachatero with their best friend Chris. While not a full-time instructor juanito shares what they know when invited centering consent curiosity and community care. Their approach challenges gendered roles and invites all bodies to explore movement with freedom and intention.

Meet Eric Geiger:

For Eric, in many ways, Contact Improvisation is inevitably a Queer practice. While improvising in contact we create a dancing space for: not knowing, risk taking, vulnerability, failure, play, ephemerality, impermanence, disorientation, unsteadiness, empathy, and hopefully traces of new and better worlds.Let’s make magic or fake magic, like winged fairies waving wands, saying poof, and sprinkling gold glitter.

I dance and make dances in an attempt to make sense of the world around me. Early on, I received a full merit scholarship to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. I was a member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company where I also taught and served as choreographic assistant to Bill. As a member of The Lyon Opera Ballet, I performed in works by William Forsythe, Stephen Petronio, Susan Marshall, Maguy Marin, and Angelin Preljocaj. I recently left my faculty position of 14 years at UCSD. Contact Improvisation, Trisha Brown-like qualities, and performing Deborah Hay’s choreography has transformed and expanded my movement capacities. I am also a certified Feldenkrais Method practitioner. As a dancemaker I am a collaborator. I’ve made dances with Anya Cloud, Karen Schaffman, Liam Clancy, Leslie Seiters, and Jess Humphrey. I live in San Diego. Queerness guides me.
