SuryaSoul Class Description

In this container we will explore varying tools from modalities across movement disciplines, and encourage each participant, to find unique entrance points to their own body that allow them deeper and easier access to their flow state. We begin with a guided improv based warmup, before exploring a specific spiritual/philosophical theme through small group exercises & finish with a somatic celebration moving together as a whole.

This class offers modifications and accommodations for all abilities, ages, and body types, and is built upon the foundation of building community through seeing and being seen by our fellow movers. Inside of this container students will be given an opportunity to explore the innate wisdom of their own body, and notice how “The Dance” is inside and all around them, ready to be accessed, as a navigating tool for life — Whether that be for an improv, freestyle, flow/poi performance, or for the next big meeting pitch, hard conversation with family, or sudden upturn in life - in this space, we learn to dance with it.

Access

DISCO RIOT classes are on a tiered payment scale ($10-30) because we believe that class should be affordable and accessible. No one is turned away for lack of funds. Please reach out to Nicole at education@discoriot.org for a waiver code.

In alignment with the values of DISCO RIOT, this class centers access, bodily autonomy, consent, and the cultivation of safe(r) community space in an ADA accessible studio. During the RSVP process, there will be a chance to share any access needs you may have. Please reach out to Alyssa at operations@discoriot.org for further accommodation inquiries or requests.

Location: The studio is located on the second floor of 1100 Kettner Blvd (accessible by elevator). The entrance to the building is through the glass doors on the corner of Kettner and B St. (in front of the street light). There will be a DISCO RIOT team member at the entrance to let you in. There is a 15 minute grace period from the start of the event. 15 minutes after, there will be no admittance into the building unless communicated in advance. Please email education@discoriot.org if you are running late.

Public Transit: We highly recommend taking public transit. The studio is directly accessible by trolley, bus, and coaster. We hope you'll consider taking advantage of this infrastructure! MTS Trip Planner

Parking: Downtown parking can take time! Please reserve 15-20 extra minutes of your commute to find parking and make your way to the building. If you are able to, consider carpooling and walking in groups at night. There is FREE street parking on Sundays and Monday-Saturday after 8:00pm, as well as attended parking lots, and public transit.

Surya Soul Teaching Artist - Meesh Herd

Meesh is an artist, art-advocate and 6th generation educator- who believes firmly in the transformative power of coming together in the name of art-making, to expand within community. They have trained, taught & communed with artists, dancers and “non-dancers” all around the world. They are deeply informed by over 20 years of performing and practicing a breadth of classical, social & regionally specific dances. The movements and philosophies of Tao and Yoga anchor their teaching practice and know in their bones, the keys to liberation have always been through singing and dancing. They are incredibly passionate about sharing those keys. Meesh substituted their first dance class at 15 and began assisting at 11.
