S P A C E Showcase, Ed. 2
DISCO RIOT’s second edition of the S P A C E Alliance Studio Residency program features three artists in residence: Jaime Nixon, Nicole Roerick and Chelsea Zeffiro. These artists and their projects were chosen for the 2020 Residencies for their unique combination of interdisciplinary approach to current events driven subject matter. Due to COVID-19, these projects also embrace the possibilities of virtual processes and include collaborators from all across the United States. DISCO RIOT’s community partners Art Produce, Balletcenter West, and San Diego Ballet have provided 40 hours of rehearsal space over a 6-week period for each of the resident artists. This iteration of S P A C E will culminate in a virtual presentation of artists’ work, free to the public, with opportunity for donations. The artists’ virtual residency portfolios will premiere on Friday the 7th with live talk-backs, showings, discussions to be held via Zoom on August 8th, 2020.
About the Artists and their Works
"I'm here. God forbid I disappear” by Nicole Roerick and collaborators (Alyshia) Sheree Harper, Trent D. Willams, Michelle Mercedes, and Cierra Willis examines societal and political issues within America regarding white privilege, allyship, the Black Lives Matter movement and unpacking racial inequality. Their working process has been a mix of Zoom rehearsals, movement and voice explorations, moments of reflection/rewatching and self-filming to be collected as a virtual portfolio.
- Performance/Live Feedback/Dialogue Session via Zoom @ 4pm PST, August 8th, 2020
"The lover: who wants to tell you everything, all at once" by Jaime Nixon is an exploration of sound, meaning-making and perception. Interested in how we add meaning and value from our gathered experiences; as culmination of his residency, Nixon will release a video-web-zine manual leading to (now)here and everywhere.
- Q & A Session via Zoom @ 5pm PST, August 8th, 2020
“SHOW & TELL: Intimacy, Crises, and Cosplay in 2020” facilitated/designed by Chelsea Zeffiro in collaboration with story and multimedia editor/producer, Summer Dunsmore, is based on the prompt: how can dance propose systems for crisis and care? Based on in-studio meditations, cos-play and character studies, automatic writing practices with friends, a low-key book club reading/listening practice, and devised script and choreographic experiments. All practices were done in response to or in collaboration with weekly practice guests who include Mondis Vakili, Ian Isles, Jaime Nixon, James McGinn and more.
- Semi-live Staging of a Work-in-Process via Zoom @ 6pm PST, August 8th, 2020
About DISCO RIOT
DISCO RIOT exists to elevate a collaborative art culture in San Diego and beyond. We seek to connect dancers and artists who want to move themselves and audiences in ways that push boundaries, and to make high impact art that promotes community, justice, and movement as a form of radical expression. DISCO RIOT produces and supports innovative dance programming, connects artists across media and form to grow and intensify our community, and provides educational spaces that reflect contemporary and progressive professional realities. Our intent is to incite the exploration and (r)evolution of what our arts community can truly be, and to change the culture of how dance exists within it. Dance is potent; dance should move people. DISCO RIOT is here to make people feel and see something significant, and to move them towards the unexpected.
