We warmly invite you to join us this July for a special evening as we bring to the forefront the stories of three trailblazing women from India’s past. Stories that are often hidden between the pages of history. 

Taking place at The Art Pavilion in Mile End, we come together with our dear friends Anita Anand (author, broadcaster and host of the Empire podcast), Shalina Patel (historian, teacher and writer) and Monika Baker (documentary filmmaker) to celebrate the lives of these women who defined history.

About the speakers:—

Anita Anand
Anita is an award-winning author, journalist, and presenter. Much of Anita’s work explores the history of the South Asian diaspora. Empire, the podcast she hosts with fellow author William Dalrymple, takes an unflinching look at empires in history, and has amassed millions of downloads since it launched in 2022.

Shalina Patel
Shalina is an award-winning teacher, historian, writer, and leading figure in the decolonisation of the UK’s school history curriculum. In 2018 she won the Silver Pearson Teaching Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School. She is also the founder of The History Corridor on Instagram, where she posts bitesize history lessons for over 22,000 followers.

Monika Baker
Monika is a producer, director and documentary filmmaker based in London. Her portfolio boasts two documentaries that surround the art of photography. One of them, Dalda 13 (1995), is a portrait of India’s first female photojournalist Homai Vyarawalla – featuring interviews with the lady behind the lens and focusing on her extraordinary life.
