People at the Centre of Net Zero: A Place-Based Labour Market Conversation

About the event

The transition to net zero is often discussed in terms of environmental targets, technology and infrastructure. However, achieving these ambitions also depends on having the people, skills and workforce needed to deliver them.

Supported by the British Academy ECR Policy Convening Fund, this policy roundtable will bring together stakeholders from local government, employers, skills and training organisations, the third sector and academia to explore how local labour markets can support a fair and inclusive transition to net zero.

The discussion will focus on the practical workforce and skills challenges that can affect local net-zero delivery and consider how organisations can work more effectively together to address them. It will also provide an opportunity to share different perspectives and identify practical actions and recommendations that can inform policy and practice.

Who is the event for?

The roundtable is particularly relevant to:

  • Researchers and practitioners with relevant expertise in net zero, labour markets or workforce and skills
  • Employers and employer representative bodies
  • Local government and policy representatives involved in net zero, economic development or workforce planning
  • Skills, training and workforce development organisations
  • Third-sector organisations working with people entering or progressing within the labour market

What will the session involve?

This will be an interactive policy roundtable rather than a traditional conference or presentation-led event. Participants will be encouraged to contribute their experience and perspectives through facilitated discussion, with a focus on identifying practical challenges, opportunities and actions.

Key insights from the discussion will inform a short policy briefing and roundtable summary following the event.
