Join us for a collaborative event exploring the widespread and complex issue of poverty in Leicester.

DMU Engagement is working with Citizens Advice to present live data on poverty in the city, alongside personal stories and lived experiences from across sectors. The aim is to build a shared understanding of the challenges and to identify practical, collaborative actions we can take together.

The event also supports DMU’s wider commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by focusing on how we can make Leicester more inclusive and resilient.

This event is the first in DMU’s refreshed Civic and Community Engagement programme and is designed to bring together a wide range of voices: community organisations, schools, businesses, students, and academics, to explore the current picture of poverty in Leicester.

Together, we hope to...

  • Build a collective picture of poverty in Leicester, using both data and lived experience.
  • Create space for cross-sector dialogue, bringing together people who don’t often get to speak in the same room.
  • Generate practical ideas and actions through breakout sessions focused on key themes (e.g. housing, education, youth opportunity, transport).
  • Onboard partners to DMU’s ongoing research projects, including CAPS and other civic initiatives.
  • Highlight and support the work of our Community Challenge Fund partners, promoting their contributions and exploring opportunities for future collaboration.
  • Capture commitments through a one-page pledge or action sheet, outlining what individuals and organisations can do next.
  • Ensure follow-on engagement, with opportunities for attendees to stay involved and help shape future work.
