Grow your own fresh food, learn new skills and help support real scientific research!
Would you like to grow fresh herbs and vegetables at home, even if you don't have a garden?
Join Growing Together: The Windowsill Project, a free 12-week community challenge where you'll receive your very own hydroponic windowsill planter to take home. Our sessions will teach you how to grow five edible plants from seed and participants will also get additional plant pots for their home, to kickstart your green fingered journey!
Hydroponics is a simple way of growing plants using a special grow media instead of soil, making it easier to grow plants and harder to kill them! It's perfect for kitchens, flats, windowsills and small spaces and no gardening experience is needed as we'll show you everything you need to know!
What you'll receive
🌿 A free hydroponic windowsill growing kit
🌱 Five edible plants to grow at home
📖 Easy-to-follow growing guides
🥗 Healthy recipes and cooking ideas
👨🍳 A practical cooking session
🌾 A microgreens growing session so you can continue growing nutritious food at home
What happens during the project?
Over 12 weeks, you'll attend four friendly community sessions, at Ty Pawb in Wrexham City Centre, on
- Thursday 20th August
- Thursday 10th September
- Thursday 8th October
- Thursday 5th November
You'll meet other participants, and each week you'll learn from local experts on a range of topics, be able to ask questions, enjoy food and refreshments and make new friends.
Together we'll:
- Build and plant your hydroponic growing kit.
- Learn how to care for your plants.
- Discover how growing your own food can support healthy eating and save money.
- Grow nutritious microgreens for salads, sandwiches and smoothies.
- Enjoy a hands-on cooking demonstration using fresh ingredients.
- Share tips, ask questions and celebrate everyone's progress.
One of the most exciting parts of the project is that you'll also be helping with real research.
Around Week 8, we'll ask you to bring a small cutting from some of your plants. These samples will be analysed by Wrexham University's Dietetics Department, who will investigate whether plants grown in different locations across Wrexham, show any nutritional differences. It's a fantastic opportunity to contribute to local research while learning something new.
