Discover how Bristol is reinventing the high street through two landmark retail transformation projects

Occupying prominent positions in the heart of Broadmead in Bristol, Sparks (the former Marks & Spencer department store) and Shredenhams (the former Debenhams building) represent two of Bristol's most innovative case studies in adaptive reuse. Rather than applying a single, static strategy to high street vacancies, these projects demonstrate how alternative, community-driven programming - ranging from climate action hubs to indoor urban sports - can rapidly reactivate redundant retail footprints.

The tour brings together the story of two distinct transformations: Sparks Bristol, co-created by Global Goals Centre and Artspace Lifespace, which reimagined the former M&S as a department store with a difference - pairing a ground floor of ethical shops, installations, and events with an upstairs hub of affordable studio, rehearsal, and performance space for local artists; and Shredenhams, led by non-profit Campus Skateboarding, which carved out an expansive indoor skatepark plaza, cafe, and community space directly from the shell of the disused Debenhams floorplate.

This is an exploration of contrast and agility - where commercial retail heritage meets grassroots activation, showing how temporary "meanwhile" uses can reclaim large-scale infrastructure for social value. The result: two landmark department stores reimagined, thousands of square metres of retail space reactivated, and a pioneering blueprint for creative urban regeneration across changing high streets.
