Description
The one-day in-person training consists of two essential components:
Morning Session - Learning Disability Workshop (3.5 Hours)
Lunch Break (30 mins -1 Hour)
Afternoon Session - Autism Workshop (3 Hours)
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Tier 2 is suitable for all staff members involved in providing care and support for individuals with learning disabilities and autism. This training will equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver person-centred care and support to those with a lived experience of autism or a learning disability.
Learning Disability (Morning Session):
Aim: Enhance learners' understanding of learning disabilities and autism, best practices in health and social care settings, and how this is supported by current legislation.
Objectives:
- Acknowledge and understand unconscious biases to avoid diagnostic overshadowing.
- Learn from the insights gained through Learning from Lives and Deaths Reviews (LeDeR), including co-morbidities.
- Promote awareness of campaigns such as Stop the Over Medication of People with a Learning Disability (STOMP) and Stopping Over Medication of People with a learning disability, autism, or both (STAMP).
- Review The Equality Act 2010 and understand the importance of reasonable adjustments.
- Comprehend the appropriate use of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
- Learn when to apply Do Not Attempt Cardiovascular Resuscitation (DNACPR).
- Enhance communication with individuals with learning disabilities and their families.
- Recognise the crucial role of hospital passports and annual health checks in supporting individuals with learning disabilities.
Autism Session (Afternoon Session):
Aim: Enhance learners' understanding of autism, best practices in health and social care settings, and how this is supported by current legislation.
Objectives:
- Understand why autism is described as an invisible condition.
- Reflect on personal values and beliefs in relation to autism.
- Recognise the unique strengths and challenges faced by autistic individuals.
- Identify potential triggers for anxiety in autistic individuals.
- Identify reasonable adjustments and ways to adapt practices to better support autistic individuals.
- Familiarise with relevant legislation and resources to promote inclusive enabling services.
Mode of Delivery:
- This training is delivered exclusively through face-to-face workshops, ensuring an interactive and engaging learning environment. Our commitment to hands-on learning allows participants to develop practical skills and engage in real-time discussions with all trainers.
- Every Workshops is supported via an experience and accredited Oliver McGowan Trainer as well as 2 co-trainers who are experts with lived experience of a learning disability and autism. Their insights are invaluable, providing a unique perspective and fostering a more empathetic learning environment.
- By participating in this training, you agree to create a respectful and inclusive learning environment while recognising the limitations and unique value of lived experiences in the context of autism and learning disability training.
Lunch Break :
- Refreshments such as tea and coffee will not be provided during training sessions.
- Kindly ensure to bring along your own food and drinks for the duration of the training.
Parking :
- Please note that there is limited parking available on site, reserved only for delegates with disabilities.
- Roadside parking is available along Sandford Lane free of charge, although it can be quite busy.
- An alternative option is the pay and display car park located at the train station, which is just a short walk from the venue.
- We also encourage attendees to consider using the train, as the station is conveniently located near the venue. Please remind yourself of the parking arrangements before the training commences.

- Each trainee MUST complete Part One of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disabilities an Autism E-Learning for Health module prior to attending either Tier 1 or Tier 2 Part 2.

- The training content may trigger difficult and upsetting feelings. It contains potentially challenging material that mentions death, trauma, mental and physical illness, system failures and inequalities faced by autistic people and people with a learning disability.
- This course requires a minimum of 6 candidates to attend; if this is not met by the day before the course it may not go ahead, and you will need to reschedule.
- Our trainers with a lived experience of autism and a learning disability require your cooperation, respect during training, and appreciate your flexibility when it comes to unforeseen circumstances and cancellations.
- The training aims to create a safe and supportive space. Any disrespectful behaviour, discrimination, or inappropriate comments will not be tolerated.
