The National Scrollathon® In Celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary
A collaborative masterwork of large-scale textile work made by Hawai’i’s keiki, with New York artists Steven and William Ladd at Downtown Art Center
In celebration of democracy and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Kennedy Center invites the National Scrollathon® to build a collaborative visual art installation. The intent is that 250,000 participants from all 50 states will make fabric scrolls, revealing the American story in all its beautiful complexity. The final artwork will be displayed Memorial Day to Labor Day, 2026 (May 26–September 7, 2026) across the Kennedy Center campus in Washington D.C.
The National Scrollathon, led by NY artists Steven and William Ladd, involves participants making two fabric scrolls—one inscribed with a personal story, and one to be part of a larger artwork. The actual art piece created here in Hawai‘i will remain in Hawai‘i and be rotated between the three participatory schools and DAC. The photograph of the art piece will be displayed at the Kennedy Center.
Downtown Art Center (DAC) has partnered with The National Scrollathon, led by artists Steven and William Ladd, to build a collaborative visual art installation on November 12, 2024 at DAC. The morning sessions will be filled by students and the Ladd’s have offered a community Scrollathon for 35 people. This workshop is free and on a first-come first-served. It’s scheduled from 5 pm – 6 PM. If you are interested in participating please complete the link below. You will then be sent a link for a participant waiver.
You can learn more about the project here.
In addition, Steven and William Ladd are initiating a “National Word Ask,” inviting participants to share one word that expresses their hopes and dreams for America at its semiquincentennial. These words will be brought together into a text-based artwork that will be exhibited outdoors on the Kennedy Center campus.
