FAIR Forever? FAIRer for Longer: Digital Preservation and the European Open Science Cloud

The DPC invites you to join us for this webinar on the challenges of preserving data in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and the research community more broadly. The webinar will provide an overview of current developments in EOSC and key findings from the recent DPC FAIR Forever study. A panel discussion with leaders and representatives of EOSC and the Open Science community will address challenges and next steps for ensuring the FAIRness of research data in the long-term.

2021 is set to be a significant year for research data management, as the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) embarks on a new implementation phase of its compelling and ambitious prospectus. EOSC seeks to bring scientists and their audiences together; to federate existing infrastructures; to augment these infrastructures; and to revolutionize how scientific knowledge is created in all disciplines, in all geographies. It aims to connect 1.7 million researchers and 70 million professionals across Europe to FAIR data and services that promote Open Science practices.

EOSC offers a practical implementation of the FAIR data principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability,) which are foundational and critical to the implementation of open science and open data.

But the question arises of how can (and indeed should) all this research data be preserved and shared for future generations? The sustainability of research data, including their long-term preservation and accessibility, is a core requirement of Open Science and will be essential to make the EOSC a success. But how ready is the digital preservation community for EOSC; and how is EOSC enabling preservation?

At the start of this new phase of EOSC, the DPC is hosting a webinar to discuss the digital preservation strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that relate to research data within EOSC and in the research community more broadly. The webinar will draw from the recent DPC study ‘FAIR Forever? Long Term Data Preservation Roles and Responsibilities’ study, commissioned by the EOSC Sustainability Working Group and funded by the EOSC Secretariat Project in 2020, highlighting key findings relating to digital preservation capacity and recommended coordinated actions by repositories, researchers, and stakeholders to better ensure the long-term preservation of—and access to—research data in all its forms.

The webinar will begin with an overview of EOSC and FAIR, followed by a summary of the FAIR Forever study’s key findings and recommendations.

There will then be a panel session where a select group of leaders and representatives will be invited to reflect on their work and challenges that preservation and sustainability create.
