Web Archiving for Beginners
Tue 5 Oct 2021 1:00 PM - Wed 6 Oct 2021 5:00 PM BST
Online, Zoom
Description
Introduction
The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) invite you to join us for a training event which will introduce the main concepts and technologies used in the web archiving discipline.
Web archiving has been taking place since the mid-1990s but is currently largely confined to a relatively small number of national institutions and universities. DPC and IIPC share the ambition to broaden the number and types of organisations undertaking web archiving and have worked together to produce a suite of training resources for beginners. The materials are also suitable for training colleagues in organisations with established web archiving programmes who are new to the discipline.
The course will take place over two afternoons. You will hear from experienced web archiving practitioners and have the opportunity to work on practical activities and engage in discussion to support your learning.
Who is the event for?
The training will benefit anyone who is new to web archiving. This may include: practitioners in organisations which do not currently undertake web archiving, recently appointed staff in organisations with an established web archiving programme or colleagues who recently moved into a role which involves some web archiving, students or interns undertaking placements in a related area, managers who wish to gain a basic understanding of how web archiving works and experienced digital preservation professionals who are not familiar with web archiving.
What we will cover:
- Why do we archive the web?
- What are web archives?
- Main concepts & Technologies
- User groups and needs
- Main approaches to web archiving
