This guided 4-week workshop takes you from idea to expressive portrait, guiding you through the process of sculpting a lifelike or character's head with clay from start to finish. Suitable for beginners.

Whether you’re new to sculpture or just looking to refine your handbuilding skills, this course will take you through the anatomy of a face, the structure of building a bust and the art of capturing expressions in 3-dimensional clay.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Week 1: The Skeleton of your Sculpture💀
We start with the structure. You’ll build a clay armature (aka the invisible support your masterpiece needs) and block in the basic proportions of the head. Think of it as building the scaffolding of your sculpture, or the skeleton behind your character.

Week 2: Features of a Face 🗿
In the second week you'll learn how to map out facial features in proportion and start carving in real detail. Your instructor will guide you on the symmetry of a face, and will help you to avoid creating a terrifying clay creature.. unless that's your vibe!

Week 3: Expression & Refinement 🤔
This is where your sculpture starts to come alive. In the 3rd week you will add expression, refine the features and work on the subtleties that will help make your clay bust appear more like a statue carved by Michelangelo. Refining cheekbones and subtle expressions will be the key part of the workshop in this week.

Week 4: Doing Final Touches & Hollowing 🗽
You’ll put on the finishing details, tidy up your textures, and learn the slightly strange but crucial process of hollowing your piece so it survives the kiln. We'll prep for firing, admire each other’s work, and you can celebrate the fact that you just sculpted a face from scratch!

PLEASE NOTE: While it's rare, there's always a small risk that pieces may crack or break during the kiln firing process due to the nature of ceramics. We take every precaution to minimise this and should any issue arise, we’ll do our best to ensure you still have a positive and rewarding experience.

We cannot offer any refunds on our courses as we need to prepare in advance for each workshop. Please do not book into the course if you cannot attend the full 4 weeks.
