An evidence based workshop for people working in health and social care roles.
This workshop is designed to take the learner on a journey; to lay the foundations of diabetes understanding and to build on their knowledge to provide the skills and confidence to support adults living with diabetes.
Learn/improve/refresh your skills and maintain your confidence!
The workshop includes activities to aid learning and understanding, covering:
- How blood glucose is regulated
- What is diabetes and the different types of diabetes
- The signs and symptoms of diabetes
- Monitoring – what checks are done to ensure that diabetes is well controlled
- The long term effects (complications) of diabetes
- How diabetes is treated - a brief overview
- Management of high (hyperglycaemia) and low (hypoglycaemia) blood glucose
- Sick day care – a brief summary
- Dietary management of diabetes (i.e. eating for health and ‘carb awareness/consistency’)
- The importance of physical activity
- Daily footcare and a basic foot check
- What are considered ‘emergency alerts’
- What a glucometer is and what it measures
- When blood glucose monitoring (BGM) is necessary
- How to maintain a glucometer and the test strips used
- How to do a capillary blood glucose test
- What to do if the blood glucose level is outside the documented range
- How to respond to different issues/events
The workshop will highlight the implications of diabetes for the older person and touch on frailty; as well as diabetes and learning disabilities (and additional resources signposted).
Every attendee will receive a comprehensive printed delegate pack on arrival and an electronic certificate after the event.
A range of useful resources will also be shared, including information from guidelines published by the National Advisory Panel on Care Home Diabetes in May 2022.
The session will be run by an experienced healthcare professional and diabetes educator.
Tea and coffee is provided with refreshment breaks. Please bring your own lunch to the session as this is not included.
