East Dulwich Beer Houses & Beer Shops Talk
This lively local history talk uncovers the forgotten world of East Dulwich's beer houses and beer shops which complemented the large number of public houses. Booth's social survey ‘Inquiry into the Life and Labour of the People in London,’ reported on the area in the winter of 1899 and was surprised by the number of children seen in the streets carrying large jugs of beer. Through old records, newspaper reports, and anecdotes, you’ll meet some colourful landlords and explore the impact of changing licensing laws and temperance campaigns and how the businesses gradually disappeared after World War 2.
