Cork Dyslexia and Me (3rd - 6th Class Primary School Students)
Tue 13 Aug 2024 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM IST
UCC, Western Gateway Building, Western Road, Cork, T12 XF62
Description
Children with dyslexia often experience anxiety, confusion, and embarrassment when they are diagnosed with dyslexia. These types of feelings often stem from a lack of understanding around what dyslexia is and what it means for the individual child or young person. Our ‘Dyslexia and Me’ workshop aims to:
- Explain the facts and science of dyslexia.
- Myth-busting! Ask any questions you might have about dyslexia.
- Boost self-esteem by exploring the positive traits and talents that come with dyslexia and talk about some of the people we know with dyslexia (whether it’s family, friends, or even famous people).
- Acknowledge the tricky or challenging parts of dyslexia, and explore ways where we can implement changes within our environment to make the world a more accessible and understanding place for those with dyslexia.
- Explore the topic of resilience and how we can use this to help us cope during tricky situations.
- Discover what our peers think of dyslexia and how they cope with their own dyslexia through engaging peer to peer learning.
- Have fun participating in our interactive activities, games and discussions.
Self-esteem and resilience building does not develop overnight. Our 'Dyslexia and Me' course aims to introduce individuals to the idea of thinking differently and more positively about their dyslexia, provide an outlet to ask questions, and to meet other young people with similar experiences!
The workshop is run by at least two of our staff members, who share a wealth of personal and professional experience working with dyslexic children and young people.
Please note:
This event is for children in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class (primary level) only, parents do not attend the event.
We ask that you arrive no more than 10 minutes ahead of the start time, and please return to the venue 10 minutes before the scheduled end time to collect your young person.
We will be using room WGB G09 in the Western Gateway Building of UCC for our event. More information on parking is available here Where Can I Park? | University College Cork (ucc.ie)
