Understanding dyslexia and supporting your child in Gaidhlig-Medium Education (GME)

This online event will introduce parents and caregivers to a research‑informed understanding of dyslexia within the context of Gaidhlig‑medium education. The session, led by Dr Emily Barnes, Assistant Professor in Language Education at Trinity College Dublin, will begin by exploring what dyslexia is, the common strengths and challenges associated with it, and the indicators of dyslexia at different ages.

In the second part, we will look at how children learn to read in two languages, why dyslexia may look different in Gaidhlig and English, and the evidence supporting the benefits of immersion education for learners with additional support needs. The final section provides practical, home‑based strategies for supporting your child, regardless of your home language. This includes creating a positive literacy environment, strengthening key literacy skills, and making effective use of resources and technologies available for Gaidhlig.

This free event is aimed primarily at parents/carers but teachers of GME who wish to find out more about dyslexia might also find it useful.

It will be recorded and available for viewing one week after the event.
